Teaching demonstration in the Practicum course was challenging but really fantastic experience in which I was able to understand the potential ability as a teacher as well as what teaching style I have.

The Reasons Why You should Choose the S-G TESOL Program
It has been nine months since I obtained my TESOL certificate at Sungkyunkwan University. As I look back at time when I was enrolling in the S-G TESOL Program, I remember that I learned and experienced from new eventful moments which occurred each lesson in class to become a better English instructor. I wasn¡¯t quite sure what to expect from the program in the beginning, because it has certainly been a while being a student to learn the topics in relating to teaching English that I was partially aware of at that time. Of course, I¡¯ve had some teaching experience, and I know enough English to get by, so I was skeptical by having a question in my mind ¡°How can this program help me?¡±
For the obvious reason, I knew that earning a teaching certificate could boost my second profession as an English instructor. I thought it was just having a piece of paper that says I attended the program diligently to get one; however, it wasn¡¯t anything like that at all. From the first day to the last day of the program, it was about obtaining sufficient information to make my own portfolio. So, I can show my work to an interviewer as I go in for an interview. It all seems so logical and it is a personal courtesy as a teacher, but prior to the program, I¡¯d had many job interviews as an English instructor, but never once, I thought about making a portfolio to show my work. Well, I¡¯ve got mine from the program, and it was all worth it, because I learned to make my own teaching materials from the program.
In addition, a group of devoted professors taught us well pumping new information into our heads. From English Conversation, I practiced making speeches and learned new teaching techniques I¡¯ve never thought of. Later on, I implemented a presentation class for adults to teach them a correct way of conducting English presentations. Through Material Use and Development, We learned how we can be more resourceful obtaining class materials from the Internet and other textbooks to teach a class effectively. The Professors were mentors to us all for making us realize what it takes to become a good teacher. I had many personal problems trying to finish the program successfully, and each time, they helped me along the way to somehow achieve my goal finishing the program with satisfying remarks. Not only they taught us Mythodology and Practicum with their eloquent skill, they educated us with their compassionate actions demonstrating what it takes to become a real teacher. For that I¡¯m grateful, appreciation that¡¯s overdue.
Nowadays, I work for Carrot Korea teaching numerous classes such as advanced conversation class, presentation class, and TOEFL class for employees working at Hyundai Mobis and Daum, Korean conglomerates. It was a big change having a previous career as a Loan Officer to an English instructor, but the program has helped me make that transition smoothly. These days, I enjoy teaching on those subjects I¡¯ve mentioned earlier, and it couldn¡¯t have been possible without the program. It was a good decision I¡¯d made to progress my second career.
Lastly, we learned our good points and points that we needed to improve as to becoming good teachers. It wasn¡¯t really about what we were bad at. After having many chances to practice teaching class materials, we gave each other constructive criticisms on their well thought out class materials they had prepared, which were good experiences for the whole class. In real life, I don¡¯t think there will be any students coming up to me and saying what I need to improve as a teacher. In this case, we had many practices teaching the class materials to know what we were doing right and what we needed to improve making students understand better on our class materials being covered.
As an alumnus of the program, I urge you to come and experience some of the feelings and thoughts they jolted me during the program. I¡¯m quite sure that you can double the experience I had to become an excellent English instructor that you have always dreamt of. Here was our class motto:
Just like the storyline goes, English can be learned.
More importantly, life can be fun doing it.
Throughout this program, we will have many obstacles,
and we will triumph with ease.
It is one that we must do it together,
and there will be more to conquer with our knowledge.
We will look back to these momentous moments,
and realize again how hard teaching can be,
but at the same time, how joyful it could be!
Having the knowledge from the program, you too can develop your teaching skills to become better teachers.
What do you want to be in the future? Are you satisfied with your current job? Do you want to be a better English teacher? Since graduation from university, I have asked myself these questions a lot. As an overseas marketer, I worked for four years and was never satisfied with my job. I was afraid for the future and at the same time, wanted to do whatever I liked and whatever I could for the rest of my life. At that moment, I discovered the SKKU-Georgetown TESOL program. That turned out to be an important decision in my life.
It was an adventure to study TESOL because I had to change my whole career and jump into an unknown ocean. While I studied in the SKKU-Georgetown TESOL program, my fear and worry changed into satisfaction. It was quite difficult to study TESOL as a salary person. Right after finishing work, I had to go to school without considering any other business appointment. I also had to make extra effort during weekend. The excellent teaching of the SKKU professors and the encouragement from classmates helped me finish the course and kept me working harder. It was an unforgettable memory as well as life-changing moment. The SKKU-Georgetown TESOL professors are still my role models, and they have me continued to encourage me.
There are various ways to be a better teacher and to learn many teaching skills. You can study English education in college or study abroad in English-speaking countries. But you do not always have to look far for opportunities. People tend to see afar and feel disappointed when not reaching that place. Look around your surroundings and find something you can do near you. One of these things could be the SKKU-Georgetown TESOL program, which is even better than some TESOL programs in the U.S.A. or Canada. The SKKU-Georgetown TESOL program is open to anyone with great dreams, and if that is where your dreams lead you, I say ¡°Go for it!¡± Like me, you¡¯ll be glad you did.
