영어교수법과 제 2 외국어 학습에 대한 이론적인 배경, 영어교수법의 최신 경향, 그리고 방법론을 학습함. 완전히 영어로 진행하는 영어 수업을 하는데 있어 필요한 여러 가지 기술과 조언을 받게된다. 이 과정 후 학생들은 각종 이론과 최신 교수법을 응용하여 실용적인 의사소통을 위한 수업을 이끌어 갈 수 있게 되며 영어의 말하기, 듣기, 읽기, 쓰기 및 문법, 발음, 어휘를 효율적으로 가르칠 수 있게 된다. 세부 수업 사항으로 제1 및 제2 언어 습득 이론들을 공부하게 되며, 의사소통 위주의 수업에 대한 개념을 터득하고 각종 교수법을 익히게 된다. 어떻게 영어의 말하기, 듣기 등 여러 기술들을 효율적으로 가르칠 수 있는가를 고민하여 세부적인 수업 계획표 수립에 응용하게 된다. 각종 Learning Styles를 배우고, 학생들의 수업 진행과 성과를 어떻게 평가하여야 할 것인가에 대한 수업이 심도있게 이루어진다. 주 교재로는 Lightbown과 Spada가 지은 How Languages are Learned (1999), 부교재로 Harmer의 How to Teach English (1998)이 있으며 각종 부 자료들이 수업 중 배부된다. 수업 출석 및 적극적 활동 참여는 필수이며 2-3회의 퀴즈와 정규 시험을 성공리에 마쳐야 하고 2주에 1회 Reflective Journal을 제출하여야 한다. 과정 수료 이전에 개인 Portfolio를 제작하게 되는데 이는 A resume of past education and experience, a statement of professional goals, a statement of philosophy of language teaching와 2개의 모든 자료를 포함한 수업 계획서를 포함하게 된다. 수업의 평가는 보통 수업 참석 30%, 각종 퀴즈 및 시험 20%, Journal 25%, Portfolio 25%로 이루어진다.

현재 사용되고 있는 영어교재를 분석 비판하는 능력을 기르고, 영어를 가르치는데 있어 필요한 교재를 선정, 개발하고, 신문, 비디오, 여러 출판물, 실제 회화 녹음, 현지 원어민 등 여러 가지 자료를 가장 효율적으로 활용하는 방법을 학습하게 된다. 과정중 학생들은 선정된 수업 자료의 효율적인 적용 방법을 토론하게 되며 각종 수업 교재를 분석한 결과를 이용한 창의적이고 효과적인 수업 자료를 스스로 만들 수 있다. 다양한 시청각 교재와 부교재를 이용하게 되며 게임, 노래, 인형, 그림, 사전이나 온라인 교구의 수업 적용 방법을 연구하게 된다. 이 수업은 컴퓨터를 통한 자료 검색 및 이용법을 포함하게 되는데 학습 도구로서의 각종 인터넷 자료 이용, 다양한 최근 주제가 올려진 TESOL 관련 자료들과 관련한 토론 등을 포함하며, 인터넷 자료를 이용한 수업 적용 방법을 연구한 후 하게 되는 그룹 발표가 있다. 분석용 지정 교재로 Jack C. Richards의 New Interchange (1997)를 사용하게 된다. 평가는 보통 수업 출석 및 참석 25%, 교재 개발에 있어서의 인터넷 이용 15%, 교재 분석, 비평 및 평가 20%, 중간 평가 20%, 기말 평가 20%로 이루어져 있다.

각 언어 습득 이론에 따른 모법수업을 비디오로 참관하고 학생 상호간의 실습과 초. 중 고등학교에서의 실습과 토론을 통하여 수업시간에 배운 이론을 활용함으로써 교수법을 습득한다. 실습 수업을 비디오로 촬영한 후 분석 비판하여 전문가로서 손색이 없도록 실력을 함양하는 것이 이 수업의 주된 목표이다. 주로 학습하게 되는 4가지의 이론 모델 비디오 수업으로 The Audio-lingual Approach, Total Physical Response, Community Language Learning와 Communicative Approach가 있으며 이들 이론의 기본 개념과 차이를 익힌 후 영어의 발음, 문법, 말하기, 듣기, 쓰기, 읽기의 교수 방법과 그 밖의 다양한 통합적인 방법을 익혀 실제 효율적으로 사용할 수 있는 수업 계획을 수립하여 실제 모델 수업을 이끌어가게 된다. 모델 수업 후 개인별 또는 그룹별 분석을 교환하여 수업의 단점을 보완하고, 장점을 향상시키게 된다. Methodology 와 Material/Technology 시간에 배운 내용을 적용하여 4회에 걸친 시범 강의를 하게 되는데, 보통 3명이 한 팀이 되어 Lesson Plan을 만들고 시범 강의를 나누어서 하게 된다. 시범 강의 시간은 10분, 15분, 30분, 45분으로 점차 늘려간다. 학기말 4번째 시범 강의는 학기의 마지막 2주에 걸쳐서 진행되며 이때에는 개별적인 강의로 비디오 녹화를 하게 된다. 녹화 후 담당 교수와 시범 강의 분석 결과를 토론하게 된다. 모델 수업 발표는 주로 Mini-lessons, Initial demonstration lesson, Final demonstration lesson으로 구성되며 수업 참석으로 30%의 배점을 포함하여, 각각 20%, 25%, 25%의 평가 배점을 차지하게 된다.

Methodology is the core course of the TESOL program. It begins with a three-week introduction to second language acquisition theory to help participants better understand the rationale for Communicative Language Teaching. It then exposes participants to a rich variety of communicative principles, ideas and techniques for use in their own classes. Attention is paid to the teaching of skills, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing, and also to topics, such as classroom management and the ways in which culture can by introduced into the classroom. As in all components of the program, participants are strongly encouraged to contribute ideas and to reflect upon those of others. The Practicum course provides hands-on teaching experience for teacher trainees.
